Jim Shaw grew up in San Francisco and Santa Barbara, California, where he graduated from the University of California. He moved to Costa Rica in 1979.  He is an avid sailor, surfer and fisherman. His own properties include a teak plantation and a beach getaway. He is involved in local Costa Rican activities based on education and ecology.
